Environmental Portraits

Portraying a person in their natural environment - workplace, home, or anywhere they might feel more relaxed and comfortable - helps capture the character of the subject and provides insight into their daily life. The resulting images are more personal - generally telling some kind of story about the subject.

Inspired by the work of photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, I watch for the “decisive moment” – the fraction of a second that leaves the viewer with the sense that they may have just stumbled into the scene.

“It’s one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it’s another thing to make a portrait of who they are.” - Paul Caponigro
